Yale Hockey Academy Moving To Centre Ice Multiplex

Relocation to Further Develop High-Performance Hockey Program

The Abbotsford School District is excited to announce that the Yale Hockey Academy (YHA) will be relocating to Centre Ice Multiplex on September 1st, 2018. The move was approved by the Abbotsford Board of Education at the December 12th, 2017 Board meeting as a means to facilitate program expansion and further the development of the high-performance hockey program.

“The Board of Education is incredibly proud of our district’s Sports Academies. Building community partnerships to strengthen these programs and services for our students is integral for the program’s longevity,” said Shirley Wilson, Board Chair for the Abbotsford Board of Education.

While the Yale Hockey Academy has enjoyed tremendous success in the last five years it has ultimately had to manage training between public and private fitness clubs. The Centre Ice Multiplex provides an all-in-one facility at a price that will not significantly raise student fees. This complex will provide students with ice time, a private weight room, a private locker room, three designated classrooms, a meeting room, and offices for staff and coaches.

Student athletes will be offered a truly unique and innovative educational experience that tailors their needs within the competitive travel schedule of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL).

“We are excited about implementing a blended learning model of instruction within a framework that will foster inquiry, career preparation, and provide a unique 21st century educational experience for these student athletes,” added Assistant Superintendent Gino Bondi. “The educational component of this move will reflect a unique proof of concept of the new curriculum and reflects the direction of our district's Secondary Operational Plan.”

In partnership with the Abbotsford School District, the Centre Ice Multiplex will be enhancing its facility as an “Athletic Centre of Excellence” under a multi-million-dollar renovation project.

“We are looking forward to having the Abbotsford School District and Yale Hockey Academy as a major partner in our complex,” said Patrick Giesbrecht, Acting GM of Centre Ice Multiplex. “The vision for Centre Ice Multiplex is to raise the bar in sports excellence in Abbotsford and this is a key step in doing that. We look forward to building on this announcement moving into 2018.”

As part of the move, the Hockey Academy will offer spring and summer hockey camps next year, with Brad Bowen, Erin Thornton, Brad Rihela and Andy Neilsen as lead instructors.

"Our school and Hockey Academy staff, under the leadership of program coordinator Billy Wilms, are very excited about the prospect of this move and the opportunities it will provide for our student athletes" noted Jinder Sarowa, Principal of Yale Secondary school.

With this move, the Abbotsford School District will discontinue new registrations for the Fraser Skills Hockey Academy and the Yale Skills Hockey Academy effective 2018-19, as part of a two year staggered approach to closing the Skills component programs and focusing on the Elite Hockey Academy.
